Vostok Station in Antarctica Last week, Russian scientists announced that they are going to drill a 20 million year old lake buried under 4 km ice in Antarctica and they were drilled out on Sunday last. According to RIA Novosti, the Russian news site said, people did take 30 years to drill all 4 km ice and not 20 years as a newspaper has reported. And this is a huge freshwater lake water "super clean" only one left in the world. Scientists hope that can be found living in the lake because it will help them better understand the history of our Earth. Above Lake Vostok totally buried beneath the Antarctic kelme ice near 4 km thick it almost completely separate from the outside world, even sunlight can not be referring to below. Can see pictures here is part of the Earth 20 million years ago, living organisms in the lake (if any) as well as other natural elements below are intact during the past 20 million years and here is what makes scientists feel pretty excited.
Prior to his appointment to the 1970s, it was just doing a normal duty station Vostok drilling only. Then 1996 saw the Russian experts and fellow British discovered kelme this lake. After looking kelme at the satellite images and photographs by means of ultrasound, they found a lake located just below the spot where they are drilling, and this may be the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. RIA Novosti reported, citing a Russian scientist: "Yesterday (Sunday), and our scientists at Vostok station kelme has completed 3,768 meters of drilling off the ice and touch the surface of the lake below That ". As Research Institute of North and South Pole are predicting that: "Lake Vostok is the ultrapure water system only giant planet, it's even twice as clean water is over 2 times the distillation kelme of us ". In 1998, it was feared that after drilling is complete, the lake Vostok might be contaminated by the stuff they use to drill down. Fortunately, in 2003, a new technology that allows people to apply can continue drilling in 2005. After drilling is complete, scientists have tried to conduct sampling of water in the lake. It is also likely they will not find anything valuable, but this is only the first phase of the study, to wait and see whether kelme they have discovered something else.
