Gareth Potter was a member of three of the most innovative groups on the scene in Wales during the 1980s and 1990s - Tradition Terrified, Pop and Flat Negative Greenhouse. In addition, it has pursued a successful acting career and varied, and it still enjoys DJing around the capital.
I've always liked music that was pwsho things a bit. Punk was a good thing, but it went the miwsic formulaic very quickly. When I was teenager I thought that as a disco record 'I shoe size Feel Love' by Donna Summer / Giorgio Morroder and Mighty Real by Sylvester / Patrick Crowley is just as revolutionary shoe size and Anarchy in the UK. There were bands like Phil incredibly experimental. People forget that record completely mental as Death Disco and Flowers of Romance has appeared on Top of the Pops early 80s. It was Joy Division, Human Leage, shoe size The Fall, Gang of Four, Young Marble Giants, Talking Heads and Devo are heroes to me. And Bowie, Krafwerk and Faust as Gods!
I often go down to Cardiff to watch a reggae bands. This was a golden age for Jamaican music and I was fortunate enough to see Black Uhuru, Gregory Isaacs, Roots Radics Band, Mighty Diamonds, Sly & Robbie, Aswad and Steel Pulse when I about 16. The reggae sounds of this time is totally cool and I still like listening to it.
He ddechraeon not Scared Tradition in 1984, and was intended to ffrico everyone out by creating rhythmic sounds with scrap metal, scratchy guitar, bass groove and monotonous driving me ranting over the top. We would invite an audience to perform with us and go into Improvisations absolutely crazy. We had been greatly influenced by Einstürzende Neubauten our, Test Dept, SPK and throbbing Gristle. It was a very intense experience but hilarious at the same time. Once we bought the car from the Scrapyard, towing it in the bar we were playing in it and just smasho it up. That was the gig. The love an audience helps us to destroy Ford Escort!
Lugg I've shoe size known since I was three years old. He lived next door to my grandmother in Caerphilly. We went to school together and we were good as two oddball in to fiwsic a la John Peel. The Lugg is a very talented web designer who also makes great furniture. shoe size He is so Practical shoe size and I'm so scatty. I think they're good Combination.
I just hated the place when I was growing up. Feel like a freak. Always in ffeits because my clothes or the fact when I went to school Welsh. We will hongio out in gangs who dressed weird. Safety in numbers. I was a big fan of dressing in clothes from the 50s and looks like Tintin and girls in ra ra skirts with big hair.
There are three tracks from the album on Tradition Terrified 'Leaving the Twentieth Century' (which came out on Chaos Records in the early '80s). How did you come to the attention of Records Disorder? What do you think of the album now?
Until meets Rhys Ore around 1980. He was at university shoe size in Cardiff and with I was singing to a group punkaidd called Dog Ears. There was loads of energy and ideas with Rhys, so when it was first demos TO ready, he was a natural person to contact. Chaos was the music somewhat formulaic to me, but go on to have a wide and important influence much more than just style of miwsic. Development, Tynal Dark, Bodies, Malcolm Neon, and much more. The two singles that followed and then the album is crucial to the development of music and the Welsh scene. shoe size
Fearful Tradition was quite a political band, and around the same time the Milky Way do things as political 'Method Non-Violence' and you had bands like the Chaos with a political stance.
The eighties was a period where you had to be really political. The miners' strike felt like some kind of Civil War. He must decide which side you were. He Apartheid still exists in South Africa, The cold war between America shoe size and Rwssia, feminism, Ireland and of course the language battle. He'll believe in what I'll say, but sometimes, when listening back, some statements shoe size in noise from a somewhat naïve and sloganistaidd. Of course there is no room for politics in music, and recordings of the Witnesses is excellent, so there is a lot to live OK. I do not think that this generation in such a hurry to create a revolution as we were. The economy is strong, unemployment is relatively low, can you drink for 24 hours. Hell, it's paradise here! What's the matter for some meager war in the middle east ...
Flat Negative Pop was something completely different. One of the best records to be released in the Welsh language, in my opinion. What was the history of the band and the EP? Why did not you r more
